MagStand: Common Questions, Answered

If you’re checking out the MagStand for the first time, it’s normal to have a few questions—about sizing, stability, compatibility, travel, and how it all fits into your workflow. We’ve pulled together the most common questions we hear and answered them here in plain language to help you get a clear picture of what the MagStand is (and what it isn’t).

What exactly is the MagStand?

The MagStand is a premium, modular lightstand designed to make setup faster, stability more reliable, and travel easier—without the bulky knobs, exposed arms, or awkward mechanics found on traditional stands. Every detail was designed with real-world shooting in mind.

Who is the MagStand designed for?

The MagStand is built for photographers and creators who value speed, stability, and reliability. It’s equally at home in a studio, on location, or on the road, making it a great fit for portraits, weddings, events, commercial work, and travel-heavy workflows.

What sizes are available, and how much do they weigh?

The MagStand comes in two interchangeable sizes: a 9 ft version and an 11 ft version. The 9 ft MagStand weighs approximately 5.1 lbs, while the 11 ft version weighs about 6.3 lbs. Both versions share the same design, materials, and modular system—the difference comes down to maximum height and collapsed length.

How stable is the MagStand, especially with larger modifiers?

Stability is one of the core design goals of the MagStand. A wide, low-profile base provides a solid foundation, and the footprint can be adjusted depending on your environment. When working outdoors or supporting larger modifiers, using the wide footprint and adding counterweight to the integrated utility hook helps keep everything planted and secure.

What lights and accessories can I use with the MagStand?

The MagStand features a precision-machined stainless steel mounting stud designed to work with standard ⅝ stud & ¼-20 thread, connections, making it compatible with the vast majority of photography and video gear. This includes speedlights, compact strobes, LED panels, small cameras, and other common accessories. If a light or accessory works on a traditional lightstand, it will work with the MagStand.

The stud also includes a flat-edge anti-rotation point to help keep gear properly aligned under load, reducing unwanted twisting during use. Non-MagMod accessories that use standard mounting threads are fully supported, giving you flexibility to integrate the MagStand into your existing setup without special adapters.

How does setup work? Is it really that easy?

Yes. The MagStand was designed to feel intuitive right out of the box. The legs deploy and collapse with a squeeze of the base buttons, and height adjustments are handled with auto-locking buttons on each section. If you let go at any point, the stand locks automatically—making one-handed adjustments easy and helping prevent sudden drops when working solo.

What’s the deal with the monopole?

Each MagStand includes a removable center pole that doubles as a handheld monopole. You can slide it out of the base in seconds using the locking lever, giving you a lightweight, mobile lighting option for fast-moving situations like receptions, events, or run-and-gun shoots.

What accessories are available for the MagStand?

The MagStand features integrated leg channels designed for modular accessories. These channels support accessories like the Leg Connector System, which allows multiple stands to snap together magnetically for easier transport and organization. The system was designed to grow, and additional accessories are already in development—if you have ideas, we’d love to hear them!

What is the MagStand Leg Base Connector system?

The Leg Base Connector system is a series of mechanical attachments that quickly enables multiple MagStands to snap together for easier transport and organization. Once connected, 2-3 MagStands can be carried together one-handed!  See our MagMod Leg Base Connector system Help Article for more details!

How many MagStands can be connected together at the same time using the magnetic Leg Base Connector system?

Technically you could connect as many as you want, but you probably can't carry 10 at a time ;)

We recommend connecting up to 3 at a time, with 2 at a time being the sweet spot. Connecting 4 or more becomes too large and heavy to transport with confidence.

How many Leg Base Connectors do I need?

For every MagStand that you want to connect to another MagStand, you need (1) MagStand Leg Connector accessory—which includes (4) corresponding parts to facilitate the easy, magnetic connection system.

Can I travel with the MagStand?

Absolutely. The MagStand breaks down into a compact size that fits into standard checked luggage, and multiple stands can typically be packed into a single bag. It’s designed for photographers who travel and don’t want to compromise on height or stability.

What makes the MagStand different from traditional lightstands?

Instead of external knobs, protruding arms, and clunky adjustments, the MagStand uses squeeze-button locks, concealed leg arms, auto-locking sections, and a removable monopole. The result is a cleaner profile, faster setup, easier transport, and a more comfortable experience overall—without sacrificing strength or durability.

What is the MagStand made out of?

The MagStand is constructed from anodized aluminum with impact-resistant housings and durable foot pads, giving it the strength needed for everyday professional use.

Is the MagStand built for professional use?

Yes. The MagStand was designed to withstand the demands of real-world professional work, whether that’s daily studio use, frequent travel, or fast-paced event shooting.

How does warranty and support work?

The MagStand is covered by MagMod’s standard limited warranty. If you ever need help with setup, compatibility, or choosing the right configuration, our support team is always available through the Help Center.

How does Kickstarter fit into all of this?

The MagStand is launching on Kickstarter as the first step in bringing it to market. Backing through Kickstarter works a bit differently than purchasing from our website, with estimated delivery timelines and fulfillment handled through the platform. After the Kickstarter campaign is fulfilled, we plan to make the MagStand available on our website at a later date.
