Ultimate MagMod Setup & Compatibility GuideUpdated a month ago

Your All-In-One Guide to Getting Lit (the MagMod Way)

Whether you're using a speedlight, a round-head flash, or a studio strobe, this guide walks you through everything you need to get started with the right MagMod gear for your light.

We designed our system to be as universal as possible—with one MagGrip 2 to rule them all, versatile mounting options, and modifiers built to grow with you no matter how your lighting evolves.

🔶 Speedlight Setup: Round-Head & Rectangular Flashes

This is where it all starts—with the MagGrip 2.

Why the MagGrip 2?
It’s our patented silicone mount that securely stretches over most hot-shoe flashes—rectangular or round head. There’s only one version to worry about, and it fits most models on the market today.

 Compatible with:

  • Most rectangular speedlights
  • Many round-head flashes
  • Basically, if it looks like a flash, there’s a good chance it’ll fit. 😏

💡 Choose Your Adventure!

Core Line

Simple. Fast. Magnetic.
Pop on your MagGrip 2 and choose from our core lineup—MagSphere 2, MagBounce 2, MagGrid 2, or Pro Gels.

MagBox Line

Want soft, dreamy light? Slide your MagRing 2 onto your MagShoe 2, pop your flash (with a MagGrip 2 installed) into the back of the MagRing, and snap your MagBox Pro onto the front. Easy as that. You can even run two flashes in one MagBox. #powercouple

XL Line (Using Speedlights? Yup, Still Works!)

Grab an S-Bracket to mount your flash to XL gear like the Reflector XL or Beauty Dish XL. Why? Because we don’t believe in limits. Add XL modifiers like the MagSphere XL, Grid XL, and Dome Gels to level up your light game.

What is an S-bracket?

An S-Bracket (also called an S-type bracket) is a mounting adapter that holds your flash (speedlight or round-head) and allows it to connect to Bowens-mount modifiers like the MagMod Reflector XL or Beauty Dish XL that would normally mount directly on a strobe light. It securely clamps your flash in place and provides a Bowens-style mount on the front, making it possible to use larger modifiers that can't attach directly to your flash. It also allows for easy tilting and rotation, giving you more control and flexibility when positioning your light.

🔶 Strobes: Big Lights, Big Modifiers, Big Control

Using something more powerful? Great. Our MagBox Pro and XL line were built with strobes in mind—from Profoto to Godox to Paul C. Buff and beyond.

 MagBox Line: Universal Softbox Magic

  1. Install a speedring (we’ve got ones for Profoto, Bowens, Buff, Elinchrom).

  2. Snap on the MagBox.

  3. Add your favorite softbox (24 Octa, 36 Strip, 42 Octa), plus extras like Dome Gels, grids, or a carry case.

XL Line: For the Big Stuff

  1. Pop the right mount onto your Reflector XL or Beauty Dish XL (Bowens included, Profoto & Godox sold separately).

  2. Mount it to your strobe.

  3. Slap on some XL modifiers—MagSphere XL, Grid XL, Dome Gels, etc.—and start creating your best light ever.

🔎 Check Your Compatibility

Wondering if your flash or strobe is compatible with MagMod? You’re in the right place.

While we haven’t tested every light under the sun (pun 100% intended 🌞), we’ve verified a whole bunch—and we’re always adding more. Use our interactive chart below to:

🤓 Pro Tips & Quirks to Know

  • Canon EL-1: Works great—just skip Pro Gels (they won’t fit the big head).

  • Nikon SB-900: Might lock your zoom to 14mm if the diffuser sensor is triggered. Add a little tape or a washer—problem solved.

  • Godox AD200 Pro II: Works perfectly with the MagGrip 2, just don’t block that circular vent.

  • Tungsten modeling bulbs: Not a match made in heaven with Dome Gels. Use without the modeling bulb.

  • Video lights: We didn’t design for them, but if you're gonna do it... just don’t melt anything.
